There are many Britons that have taken the plunge and moved abroad to Europe, drawn by a promise of a different culture and lifestyle. If you are considering joining the 100,000 ex-patriots that have moved to France then there are a few things that you may need to help out. One of the first things you will need to start on is learning the language and this will need a little more than a GCSE or O level standard that is still a little hazy in your memory. You will also need to find a good French translation service to help with all of the legal documents that are associated with moving house, as well as needing help with estate agents (agent immobiliers) and solicitors (notaires).
As well as buying a house there will be many more things for you to consider, registering your children with the local schools, filling in and translating tax forms and even sorting out your healthcare. These are just some of the things overlooked by people making the commitment to moving to another country.

Throughout history France has been known for its decadence and style. From the palace at Versailles and Notre Dame to the more modern styling of the Pompidou centre, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre's pyramids. But it is also a country of revolution and invasion, the first notable invasion of the country was by the Romans. In the pursuit of expanding Julius Caesar's empire throughout Europe the Romans battled the Gauls and eventually took the country on as their own. As the Romans pushed on towards Great Britain their presence in France would have a lasting effect with Vulgar Latin taken on board as the main language for trade, educational and official reasons. With it’s grounding in Latin and some Celtic retained by the Gauls modern day French is considered to be one of the Romance languages.
By the 3rd century the tribes to the north and east of France started to push into the country and in particular the Franks, Visigoths and Alemanni settled into their new surroundings. The new tribes had a large effect on the spoken language in the area altering the syntax and pronunciation of the locally spoken Latin. Eventually after the influences of the Normans, Celts, Saxons and eventually the Arab speaking world modern day French was distinctive enough to be declared the language of the country and pushed Latin out.
The key event in French history is the shift from an absolute monarchy to the democracy that we see today, although this took a long period of time the event that started the whole process is know as The French Revolution. The Revolution started in 1789 and eventually ended in 1799, during this time the country was subjected to periods of extreme repression, execution and warfare with many other countries in the region. Although considerably disruptive to the country the effect of the revolution was to put in place principles of nationalism and citizenship.
