History Of Spain And The Spanish Language

Originally influenced by invading Romans and their Latin language, Spanish has been added to and shaped by Arabic and by many invading tribes during the last thousand years.

The history of Spain is carved by conquests, artists and finally by civil war. At its peak the Spanish empire controlled large parts of the Americas, Italy and parts of Asia. With the country involved in almost every major conflict in Europe including the Napoleonic wars in the 1800's and with the legendary Armada ruling the waves in the late 16th century, Spain's influence on world events has always been a factor.

During the peak of Spain's empire the country sought to find new trade routes between their territories and between friendly countries. Although not Spanish himself Christopher Columbus is an intrinsic part of Spain's exploration of the world. By discovering the Americas whilst trying to reach Asia by travelling west to establish quicker trade routes led to Spain taking control over a literal gold and silver mine.

The final part of modern Spanish history belongs to the civil war between 1936 and 1939 as the Nationalists led by General Franco aided by Italy, Germany and Portugal faced off against the Republicans who where helped by the USSR. With Franco and the Nationalists finally winning the war in 1939 the country began a long period under the dictatorship of General Franco until his eventual death in 1975. In the following years Spain slowly became a democratic state and still retains its monarchy
