The final part of modern Spanish history belongs to the civil war between 1936 and 1939 as the Nationalists led by General Franco aided by Italy, Germany and Portugal faced off against the Republicans who where helped by the USSR. With Franco and the Nationalists finally winning the war in 1939 the country began a long period under the dictatorship of General Franco until his eventual death in 1975. In the following years Spain slowly became a democratic state and still retains its monarchy
